Python programming - Introduction
This practical four-day course provides an introduction to Python 3, covering the core programming concepts needed to develop applications, automate tasks and work with data. Participants will also learn how AI assistants can support coding and how to add AI capabilities to Python applications using the ChatGPT API.

- Python fundamentals, variables, data types and built-in functions
- Flow control, loops and conditional expressions
- Functions, parameters and variable scope
- Modules, packages and the Python package manager (pip)
- Lists, tuples, dictionaries, sets and comprehensions
- Working with strings and text
- Reading, writing and processing files
- Exception handling
- Operating system services and task automation
- SQLite databases and basic database operations
- Creating basic desktop interfaces using TkInter
- Classes, objects, methods, properties and inheritance
- Using Visual Studio Code and Jupyter
- NumPy for working with data and arrays
- Pandas for data structures and data analysis
- Matplotlib and other tools for data visualisation
- Using AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Copilot to support coding
- Prompting techniques and iterative AI-assisted development
- Making API calls from Python
- Introduction to adding AI functionality to Python applications using the ChatGPT API
Prerequisite: Some experience with at least one other programming language is desirable. This is not an introduction to programming course. Working knowledge of Windows, MacOS or Linux is also recommended.
